Hand Engraver

Jim Finch

Jim Finch is a dedicated hand engraver with a passion for traditional firearm and ornamental metal engraving. He first discovered the beauty and artistry of engraving as a young adult and was immediately drawn to the extraordinary skill, discipline, and history behind the craft.

Over the years, he developed a deep admiration for the master engravers whose work shaped the art form, spending countless hours studying the designs and techniques of legends such as L.D. Nimschke, Winston Churchill, Phil Coggan, Ken Hunt, Ron Smith, and many others whose contributions continue to inspire engravers around the world. Their influence helped shape Jim's appreciation for balance, scroll design, shading, and the importance of engraving that complements and elevates the object itself.

In 2018, Jim began formally pursuing engraving training and dedicated himself fully to developing the technical and artistic skills required to work at a professional level. Working primarily with traditional hand engraving techniques, he focuses on creating designs that respect the rich history of the craft while adding lasting beauty and value to firearms, knives, jewelry, and other fine objects.

His work often explores classic American scroll styles, ornamental layouts, and deep relief engraving, with careful attention to line quality, depth control, and flow across complex surfaces. Through Finch Engraving, Jim continues to document both completed works and the ongoing learning process, driven by a genuine love for craftsmanship and a commitment to preserving the traditions of fine hand engraving.

The Philosophy

Why Hand Engraving

In an age of laser etching and CNC machines, hand engraving stands apart. Every cut is made freehand, guided by years of practice and an intimate understanding of metal. The result is work that carries the unmistakable character of the human hand — imperfect in the most perfect way.

"The graver does not lie. Every line reveals the hand that made it."
— A principle of the craft
